Georgetown Basketball 2008-09 GEORGETOWN BASKETBALL FOR STARTERS Game 24 • Georgetown enters today’s game with a 13-10 overall record and a 4-8 mark Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009 in the BIG EAST following a 98-94 overtime loss at Cincinnati at Syracuse last Georgetown (13-10, 4-8 BIG EAST) at Saturday. • Georgetown is ranked No. 1 in Strength of Schedule according to the Warren South Florida (8-16, 3-9 BIG EAST) Nolan College Basketball Ratings; the Hoyas’ opponents this year have a combined Sun Dome (10,411) winning percentage of .625. • The Hoyas are No. 36 in the RPI Ratings and boast three wins over top-25 teams Tampa, Fla. this year (No. 1 UConn, No. 8 Memphis and No. 23 Syracuse). • Following tonight’s road game, the Hoyas will return home to play three of the TODAy’s game last five regular season games, where they are 10-3 this season. Callahan, B.S.F.S MALS Mentor: Shelly Habel, Ph.D ABSTRACT Intercollegiate Athletics Programs in America generally follow two models, “Competitive” Athletics and “Participatory” Athletics. “Competitive” athletic teams are well funded and capable of winning conference and NCAA championships. “Participatory” athletic teams are not well funded and are not expected to win. “Participatory” teams are centered around the idea of providing student-athletes an opportunity to compete in a sport they enjoy playing. Georgetown University, a member of the Big East Athletic Conference, is operating its Athletic Department using both the “Competitive” and “Participatory” models. Georgetown University’s marquee athletic program is Men’s Basketball and membership in the Big East Conference has proven to be very valuable for the team and the University. The exposure of the program and the University on national television broadcasts gives Georgetown a tremendous amount of publicity. Revenues from ticket sales and merchandising have also proven to be very lucrative. The Big East Conference is great for the game of basketball but the same cannot be said for all sports at Georgetown.
