  • OPEN and DISTANCE LEARNING TOWARDS the ERADICATION of ILLITERACY of the TEA-GARDEN WORKERS in BANGLADESH: Problems and Prospects
Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education-TOJDE April 2015 ISSN 1302-6488 Volume: 16 Number: 2 Article 6 OPEN AND DISTANCE LEARNING TOWARDS THE ERADICATION OF ILLITERACY OF THE TEA-GARDEN WORKERS IN BANGLADESH: Problems and Prospects Sodip ROY Lecturer (Political Science) Open School Bangladesh Open University, BANGLADESH Md. Abdus SATTAR Lecturer (Sociology) Open School Bangladesh Open University, BANGLADESH ABSTRACT Development of a society means the accumulation of improvement of all units of the society whatever it is small or large and important or less important. Needless to say that education goes identical with development. We have a large number of marginal people in different sector and region. Tea garden workers are one of them who are working silently for the improvement of the nation but they are not getting any educational degree in spite of their noble intention. Most of them are illiterate. Even they cannot make simple calculation of their household. Moreover, tea garden worker are low paid. About 56 percent labor work six days and 23 percent in seven days in a week but most of them are paid monthly less than 2500 taka for each. Yet they (63 percent) want to study again though they face financial problem (77 percent) and rest of them say about communication problem, unavailability of schools, adjustment problem with the schedule of the school, unwillingness of the authority and limited scope for the aged and dropped. Few of them claim against the management authority who often reluctant to give any chance for their betterment. It is impossible for them to avail conventional education.

  • Event Report
Event Report Page 1 of 8 Celebrating 50 years of Independence: BILIA Lecture Series LECTURE 3 MUJIBNAGAR GOVERNMENT: THE BIRTH OF THE REPUBLIC Though unsung, April 10 is one of the most significant national days in Bangladesh. On this very day in 1971, following the declaration of independence, Bangladesh formed their first government and thereby fulfilled all the criteria of a free and sovereign ‘State’ according to the provisions of international law. On this historic occasion, Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs (BILIA) organized a lecture session on ‘Mujibnagar Government: the Birth of the Republic’ which was held on 29th May of 2021. This was the third lecture of the series initiated by BILIA in celebration of the golden jubilee of the independence of Bangladesh and was held virtually through the zoom platform. Page 2 of 8 Welcome Address In his welcome address, Prof. Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Director, BILIA, greeted the participants and conveyed his gratitude to the keynote speaker, panel discussants, the honourable chair, and other guests present at the event. Then he explained the context of selecting this topic. He said that the formation of the Mujibanagar Government in April 1971 was one of the greatest milestones in our national struggle for freedom. Unfortunately, even after five decades of independence, this extraordinary episode of history has not been well-documented and well- researched. He hoped this lecture will provoke a renewed interest in the issue. Keynote Speech The Keynote speaker of the session was Mr. Justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury, former judge, Appellate Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh. He, at first, shared his Joy Bangla greetings with Barrister M Amirul Islam, the honorable Chairman of the Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs (BILIA) and other guests.

  • A Critical Analysis of Censorship Law and Bangladeshi Film
Journal of Law, Policy and Globalization www.iiste.org ISSN 2224-3240 (Paper) ISSN 2224-3259 (Online) Vol.36, 2015 A Critical Analysis of Censorship Law and Bangladeshi Film Kazi Shariful Islam Lecturer, School Of Law, Britannia University,Paduar Bazar, Bishwa Road,Comilla [email protected] Abstract Personally, I am one of the biggest fans of film from my very childhood. Especially I am the audience of Bangladeshi film. When I first met with television at that time the film was telecasted in Bangladesh television in every 15 days. These 15 days seemed like a thousand years. Normally at that time Bangladesh television was telecasted the film of early 70’s and 80’s (it is called the golden time of Bangladeshi film). Sareng bou, jibon theke neya, father, golapi ekhon train e, ora egaro jon, vat de, shutorang, behula, nil akasher niche, abar tora manush ho type film made me the biggest fan of Bangladeshi film. But when I reached in class 8/9 the total scenario was changed radically. Vulgarity in film, cut peace etc made the nasty environment. Someone came from cinema hall was not expected from our society. Sometimes it indicated the less personality of him! I felt sorry for that. From that time we lost our film market rapidly. We transfer the responsibility of entertainment to the big shoulder of television. Specifically a 14” to 32” television captured our every taste of entertainment. Specifically Indian serial exploit us. Those who declared themselves as a smart and intellectual audience heavily relied on toliwood movies. Almost the same story of Kolkata movies grasps the cinema field of Bangladesh.

  • Downloads the Price of Our Clothes Poetry Packet
The Price of Our Clothes Poetry Packet Alison Morse The poems in this packet are a resource for anyone interested in promoting understanding and desire to act in solidarity with the people who make our clothes. They’re inspired by my family history and historic events. Soon after my Jewish grandmother fled the Russian Empire as a tween and arrived in NYC in the early part of the 20th century, she found a job in a Manhattan knitting mill, emulating her three older sisters, sewing operators in Manhattan garment factories. My relatives joined the apparel business at a time when the industry was one of the only occupations open to poor, young, immigrant women. They worked long hours for little pay in dangerous conditions. This was the era of the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire in NYC, an accidental blaze that killed 146 garment workers— mostly young, immigrant women—and spurred a national movement to improve the lives of American factory workers. I immediately thought of the Triangle fire when Rana Plaza collapsed in Bangladesh in 2013, killing 1,134 garment makers. Many of the people killed were poor young women who’d been eking out a living for the first time—like my grandma and her sisters. How could the industry have changed so little in 100 years? I published a poem about this question, which led to a research trip to Bangladesh, during which, I interviewed a number of survivors of Rana Plaza, labor rights activists and lawyers, and women who sewed in Bangladeshi factories. The garment makers I met asked me to tell their stories.

  • A Brief History of Music in Bangladeshi Cinema Before Liberation (1956-1970)
Vol-6 Issue-3 2020 IJARIIE-ISSN(O)-2395-4396 A Brief History of Music in Bangladeshi Cinema before liberation (1956-1970). Ruksana Karim Lecturer, Dept. of Music, Jagannath University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Former research fellow, 2015-16 & 2018-19 Bangladesh Film Archive. Abstract This study describes the beginning of musical journey of Bangladeshi cinema. The 49 years old country ‘Bangladesh’ has a beautiful history of cinema and music (near about 122 years old). But the journey was not as easy as present when Bangladesh (previous East Pakistan) was a part of Pakistan. This paper is a complete narration of musical perspective in Bangladeshi cinema and introduces authentic Bangladeshi culture. The history of Bangladeshi cinema is very much related with Indo-Pak sub continental cinema history. From another aspect, this study discusses the positive sides, all ups and downs of the beginning period of Bangladeshi cinema music. The methodology of this study is purely based on historical analysis and description that includes quite observation, literature reviews and interviews. Music in Bangladeshi cinema is strongly connected to the roots of its culture and this chapter really needs a quality research to go forward. From another view, this study introduces a good number of film makers and music directors of Bangladesh who had a lot of art work to make the history, classifies the film song in different categories and describes how the socio-economic condition presents through music in cinemas? It seems like a mirror, which is only the reflection, their life, culture and Bengali nationality. To forward this glory to the future generation and other nations, there is no alternative of describing the fundamental history as this study is doing.
