Day 1 Wednesday 18th September

Dullstroom The plane landed at 09h10 and we picked up luggage, then left the airport and picked up Stephen and Janet and were swiftly on our way. Our first stop was at the Groenfontein Pan, where we recorded Greater Flamingo, Maccoa Duck, Southern Pochard, Curlew Sandpiper, Cape Shoveller and Little Grebe, among others. We moved on to lunch at the Alzu Service Station, with Buffalo, White Rhino and Eland as our lunch companions. On the Carolina road we stopped at another pan (shallow body of water, usually natural and ephemeral) the scopes came out and we had good sightings of Ruff, Common Greenshank, Three-banded Plover, Pied Avocet and Black- winged Stilt. On the road to Dullstroom we spotted our first Long-crested Eagle as well as a herd of Black Wildebeest and Grey Rhebok. We finally arrived at our accommodation for the next two nights, where our lovely hostess Donna welcomed us and later served us a delicious ‘farm’ dinner of Ox-tail stew.

Day 2 Thursday 19th September

Dullstroom Our first seen today was a Black-backed Jackal. We were in luck as we saw a Wattled Crane very early on in our drive. We also saw a pair of Oribi, followed a bit later on by another two pairs. On our way to Uyssedoorns we scoped a stand of Protea bushes and soon spotted a Gurney’s Sugarbird as well as a Malachite Sunbird, which came out and perched on a pink Protea flower to make for a wonderful contrast of colours. The Grey Crowned Cranes were also on their post, and we then headed back for breakfast. In the afternoon we took a drive to the hamlet of Tonteldoos, which produced Southern Bald Ibis, Red-throated Wryneck, Bokmakierie and Buff-streaked Chat as of note. We also saw Sable Antelope and Springbok, but these are stocked and not really countable as a genuine ‘tick’ for our lists. We then made an attempt to locate the pair of Cape Eagle Owls which are known to roost on a rocky outcrop near the municipal dam, but didn’t have any luck. We then headed back for another wonderful dinner before tomorrow’s early start.

Day 3 Friday 20th September

Blyde River Canyon We left at around 06h00 with our packed breakfasts, making our way to Mount Sheba. We arrived at about 08h00.

South Africa - Kruger Tour Report

During our time at Mount Sheba we had a great ‘purple patch’ with most of the key birds seen in one spot as part of a party. Species seen included; Narina Trogon, African Emerald Cuckoo, Orange Ground Thrush, Swee Waxbill and Dark-capped Yellow Warbler. We then continued our journey, stopping off along the way for a pancake lunch. We got to the Three Rondavels View Site in the late afternoon, where we saw Mocking Cliff Chat, Tawny-flanked Prinia, Rock Kestrel, White-necked Raven, Shelly’s Francolin, Chacma Baboon, some wonderful wild flowers, Skinks and a toad in addition to the spectacular views of the Blyde River Canyon. We arrived at our accommodation at around 17h30 and had some time to relax and freshen up before dinner.

Day 4 Saturday 21st September

Satara, KNP We had an early start to see the sunrise over the Three Rondavels, with a nice sighting of four Southern Bald Ibis flying overhead. We then had breakfast, packed up and got underway for the Kruger National Park, with a stop off at the Taita Flacon site on the Abel Erasmus Pass. We spent a good hour and a half at the site, with flight views of the falcon, as well as species such as Mountain Wagtail, Green-backed Cameroptera, Rock Kestrel, Brown Snake Eagle, Cape Vulture, White-necked Raven and Pied Crow.

Moving on, when we got to Orpen Gate we transferred to our open game viewing vehicle, fairly well wrapped up as the wind was rather chilly. The birding on the way to Satara Rest Camp was good, and we recorded species such as Pied Kingfisher, Black Crake, Klaas’s Cuckoo, Grey Tit-Flycatcher, Green-backed Heron and many others, as well as African Elephant, White Rhinoceros, Hippo, Southern Giraffe, Plains Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Impala, Kudu, Common Waterbuck and Steenbok. We arrived in camp in the late afternoon and had time to freshen up before dinner.

Day 5 Sunday 22nd September

Satara, KNP Our morning route included the S100, a well-loved route following the Nwanetsi Creek eastwards towards the Lebombo Mountains. At a small pool in the river we found four Saddle-billed Storks (2 juvenile and 2 adult), six Hamerkops and a pair of Woolly-necked Storks competing for the fish remaining in the ever shrinking pool. Further on around 40 Yellow-billed Storks crowded around another such pool. We also had a glimpse of a Lionesses’ tail flicking on the grass as she stalked a herd of Impala. On the afternoon drive into the arid plains to the north of camp we saw seven Lions, three of which were eight-week old cubs, and despite the strong cold, wind that blew all day we enjoyed some great birding and wildlife viewing. The night drive produced Spotted Hyena, African Civet, Lesser Bushbaby, Large-spotted Genet and African Wild Cat.

Day 6 Monday 23rd September

Skukuza, KNP After enjoying our early morning coffee we packed up and started our slow drive down to Skukuza, but not before checking to see whether the Peter’s Epauletted Fruit Bats and African Scops Owl were at their usual roosts, which they duly where. Just outside the camp gates we waited for a bachelor herd of around 30 Buffalo bulls to cross the road, providing for great photographic opportunities.

South Africa - Kruger Tour Report

At Nkaya P1pan a herd of Impala came down to drink despite a large Nile Crocodile lying basking on a rock quite close to them. There was great anticipation as we waited to see whether the crocodile would make a move on one of the antelope, but unfortunately for us (but perhaps fortunately for the Impala) the croc just slid off the rock into the water. A stop at Orpen Dam produced Green-backed Heron, African Jacana, African Fish-Eagle, to name a few, and we were also entertained by the antics of the resident Hippo’s. At the bridge over the Sabie River we spent a while watching a troop of Chacma Baboons crossing the river by jumping from rock to rock and it was rather interesting to see how each individual approached the obstacles. We then pushed on to camp for time to relax and freshen up before dinner.

Day 7 Tuesday 24th September

Pretoriuskop, KNP We started off with an early morning walk in the camp, with excellent views of Scarlet-chested Sunbird, White- browed Robin-Chat, Terrestrial Brownbul, Yellow-bellied Greenbul and Crowned Hornbill. We then paid a visit to the bird hide at Lake Panic, where we saw Grey Herons feeding young, and Village and Lesser Masked Weavers at a bustling nest colony. Oh, and there was also a pair of Goliath Herons on a nest with chicks.

We then had breakfast at the golf club before moving on to Pretoriuskop, our last stop for the tour, seeing Klipspringer, Giraffe and Elephants on the way there. After checking in and taking a bit of a rest we went on a sunset drive with a guide from the camp, seeing Serval as a mammal highlight as well as Spotted Eagle-Owl and Lizard Buzzard.

Day 8 Wednesday 25th September

Departure We took an early morning drive in the hopes of finding a Leopard. At one point if only I had turned right instead of left we would have seen a female Leopard with cubs! Such is the nature of game viewing, where one choice in terms of route can make all the difference. We then headed back for breakfast and then took a slow drive ort of the park, switching to our ‘normal’ vehicle for the drive back to Johannesburg via Kaapsehoop, where we saw the resident ‘wild’ horses (descendents of those left behind by soldiers and miners in the late 19th Century), before pushing on to the airport where the tour came to an end.
