Machu Picchu - Situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley, 80 kilometers Northwest of Cusco and through which the flows. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacutec (1438– 1472). Often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas", it is perhaps the most familiar icon of the Inca World. Machu Picchu

The Temple of Three Windows, together with the Principal Temple and the Intihuatana, make up what Bingham called the Sacred Plaza. He believed that the three windows framing the distant mountains represented the three mythological caves from which the Ayar brothers, children of the sun, stepped into the world. Shards of smashed pottery were found beneath the temple perhaps indicating that pots would have been ritually broken here. Machu Picchu

The Temple of the Condor in Machu Picchu is a breathtaking example of Inca stone masonry. A natural rock formation began to take shape millions of years ago and the Inca skillfully shaped the rock into the outspread wings of a condor in flight. Huayna Picchu

PUNO & LAKE TITICACA

Puno is located on the shores of Lake Titikaka at 3850 meters above sea level. Puno is the city of folklore, music and dance. In "la Fiesta de la Virgen de Candelaria" in the first week of February about 70 local groups show their dances. In and around Puno more than 300 dances stood the test of time and are still practiced.

In the small tiny streets of Puno a lot of bicycles are used for personal transportation and as taxis bringing visitors to the harbor at the end of Avenida el Puerto and Avenida Titikaka. Boat trips are offered with a guide to the floating islands of the Uros and to the islands of Taquile and Amantaní.

When the Incas extended their Empire, the Uros Indians living on the shores of the lake Titikaka withdraw onto the LakeTitikaka where the main vegetation is the Totora reed. With this totora reeds they built their floating islands. The Incas left them alone and centuries later until now they still live on their islands. They live from fishing and recently from the sales of souvenirs to tourists. On the way to Puno
