Having begun his musical studies in his native California with his father, Joseph Alessi, Sr., as a high school student in San Rafael, California, Mr. Alessi was a soloist with the before continuing his musical training at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music. Prior to joining the New York Philharmonic, Mr. Alessi was second trombone of The for four seasons, and principal trombone of L’Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal for one season. Heralded by the American Record Guide as having produced “One of the best trombone recordings ever made … superb tone quality at all dynamic registers” and by the New York Times as having given “a stunningly virtuosic performance” Mr. Alessi is one of the most exciting and sought-after trombone virtuosos in the world.

His talent is matched only by his charitable spirit which makes Mr. Alessi well-suited for this partnership with the all-volunteer musicians of World Doctors Orchestra (“WDO”). Comprised of over 1,000 accomplished physician/musicians from fifty nations, WDO is an organization laser-focused on its mission to use music as a means to end barriers to access to healthcare.

Mr. Alessi and WDO are excited to come together to benefit George Mark Children’s House in San Leandro, California. As the first freestanding pediatric palliative care center in the United States, George Mark Children’s House is a leader and model in the relief of the pain, symptoms, and stress of illness, regardless of prognosis, and is compatible with treatments that are meant to cure. By promoting and raising money to benefit this remarkable organization, WDO is taking yet anothher step to raise globally the idea of healthcare as a basic human right and a precondition for human development.

ABOUT WORLD DOCTORS ORCHESTRA Two to three times a year, WDO’s members exchange their white coats for evening attire and perform benefit concerts that, since the organization’s inception in 2007, have raised almost half a million dollars for health related charities. WDO and its sister organization based in Germany have had significant musical triumphs in North America including performances of Brahm’s First Symphony at Severance Hall in Cleveland, Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony at Strathmore Hall in Bethesda on the occasion of a memorial tribute to the victims of September 11, 2001, and Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony in Seattle and Vancouver. WDO’s greatest triumph, however, has been the tangible support it has provided to patients without insurance at the Free Clinic in Cleveland, to caregivers assisting people living with HIV/AIDS in Washington, D.C., and to the children, seniors, and families of the Puget Sound region and Vancouver, B.C., lifted up by the Seattle Times Fund for the Needy and the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.
