Immunization, Pakistan The Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) is a public health program, launched in Pakistan in the year 1978. The aim and aispiration behind the launch is to protect children through immunization against Childhood Tuberculosis, Poliomyelitis, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus and Measles. Moreover, the EPI program also vaccinates pregnant women with Tetanus Toxoid vaccine to protect newborns from neonatal tetanus. Over these years, with support from the Government of Pakistan and development partners, EPI has included two more important vaccines, Hepatitis B and Hib (Haemophilus influenza type B) in its childhood immunization paraphernalia. In 2012, the Government also announced to introduce and add pneumococcal vaccines along with the other immunization vaccines. The main objective of the EPI program is to reduce mortality rate, disease and disability that occur due to vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs). The approach to achieve this objective is through providing maximum contribution to strengthen the National health systems and attainment of the Millennium Development Goal 4 (MDG-4)1. EPI services are provided almost exclusively through the public health delivery network by means of fixed centers and outreach services. The centers are managed by the vaccinators with support from the lady health workers (LHWs), basic health units (BHU) staff and hospital staff. 1.2 Introduction to vLMIS In recognition of numerous challenges with the vaccine management system, the Federal and Provincial Governments in Pakistan are keen to improve data visibility and address the supply chain challenges. Amongst other possible solutions, stakeholders have identified the need of an integrated web-based LMIS on priority basis to address these data visibility issues. In April 2013, the Government of Pakistan through the National Vaccine Management Committee (NVMC), requested USAID to provide support in enhancement of the existing web-LMIS. The enhancement request is to include a module for managing vaccine and cold chain data, referred as the vaccine logistics management information system (vLMIS). The request was proposed after reviewing Pakistan specific web-based LMIS for contraceptives and tuberculosis medicines developed by the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT and John Snow, Inc. (JSI). 1Ministry of Health 2001 National Health Policy, Islamabad : Government of Pakistan Pakistan EPI Directory 2013-14 Page 1 The project started to work on the vLMIS enhancement, improvement and development from May 2013. To ensure the capability of vLMIS, in serving the needs of the EPI program and the Polio eradication effort, all public and private sector stakeholders agreed on a common Roadmap. This roadmap ensures the operation of vLMIS effectively functioning from January 2014, initially in 54 priority and Polio high risk districts of the country. 1.3 vLMIS Objectives In collaboration with
