Rodents overrun Brooklyn subway plaza with ‘ambiguous’ ownership By Gabriel Sandoval THE CITY Every morning, Aida Torres shoos away ro- dents, then repeatedly cleans in front and behind her Mexican restaurant, Don Burrito, in Brook- lyn’s Newkirk Plaza. In the afternoon, she pours chlorine on the ground to deter the critters from scampering around her niche in the small shopping plaza atop the B and Q-line subway stop in Flatbush. At night, she tightly seals off every nook and cranny of her business’ exterior — out of fear of a full-out rat invasion of her restaurant’s kitchen and food storage area. “They’re not small rats,” Torres told THE CITY in Spanish. “They’re huge.” Torres and others in the neighborhood say they’re confronting an ever-growing rat infesta- tion problem that no city or state agency is taking responsibility for. Last week, leaders of the nonprofit Flatbush Development Corporation (FDC) rallied at the plaza with locals, elected officials and City Coun- cil candidates to draw attention to the crisis that many say has been brushed aside by Mayor Bill de Blasio, city agencies and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The city owns the plaza, according to the MTA. “We need New York City government to take Residents say this vacant lot is a big part of the rat problem around Newkirk Plaza in Brooklyn. Alesi re- tired after 2012. And what of Lentol? Believe it or not, there were electoral consequences for him as well. One of the contributing factors in Lentol’s 2020 pri- mary loss was weaker than expected turnout from the Hasidic community. That community certain- ly showed up for him, but the numbers were not as strong as expected and not enough to save him. It is clear that some of the more conservative members of that community held Lentol to task for his support of the Marriage Equality Act, bills on transgender rights and a handful of other issues that made him too liberal for their tastes. At this point, it is all history. Today’s pro- gressive will eventually be called out by someone younger for being too conservative. But legisla- tive votes matter.
