Match background

Two former UEFA Cup winners have their sights set on a first UEFA Europa League triumph as Internazionale and Shakhtar Donetsk, both unbeaten in this season's competition, go head to head in a much-anticipated semi-final in Düsseldorf. • Inter entered the UEFA Europa League after failing to negotiate a way through their UEFA Champions League section, finishing third behind Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund. They cruised past Bulgarian champions Ludogorets in the round of 32 (2-0 a, 2-1 h) before overcoming Getafe 2-0 in a single-leg round of 16 encounter in Gelsenkirchen and Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in their quarter-final in Düsseldorf, Nicolò Barella and Romelu Lukaku scoring the goals. • Shakhtar's hopes of prolonging their UEFA Champions League campaign into the spring were dashed by a closing 0-3 home defeat by Italian debutants Atalanta, who thus pipped them to the runners-up spot behind Manchester City. Benfica, who had also moved across from the UEFA Champions League, were then overcome in the round of 32 (2-1 h, 3-3 a) before the Ukrainian champions won both round of 16 matches against Wolfsburg (2-1 a, 3-0 h) and then overwhelmed Basel 4-1 in their quarter-final in Gelsenkirchen with goals from Júnior Moraes, Taison, Alan Patrick (penalty) and Dodô. Previous meetings • The clubs have been drawn together just once before in UEFA competition, Inter beating Shakhtar 3-1 on aggregate in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, a 1-1 draw in Milan following a 2-0 win in Donetsk. Shakhtar's coach at the time was Mircea Lucescu, formerly of Inter. • Inter are undefeated in their eight UEFA encounters against Ukrainian sides (W5 D3), most recently beating Dnipro twice (1-0 a, 2-1 h) in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League group stage, with Danilo D'Ambrosio scoring the winner in Kyiv. The 2005/06 qualifier against Shakhtar is Inter's only previous knockout tie against Ukrainian opposition. • Shakhtar's record against Italian clubs in UEFA competition is W7 D2 L15, with a win and a defeat already this season against Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League. They have won only one of their five knockout ties against Italian opposition, 6-2 on aggregate against Roma in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League round of 16 (3-2 a, 3-0), although the Giallorossi got their revenge at the same stage of that competition seven years later, Shakhtar going out on away goals (2-1 h, 0-1 a). This is the Donetsk club's first encounter with Serie A opponents in the UEFA Europa League. Form guide Internazionale • Fourth in Serie A in 2018/19, Inter's European campaign ended with defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 after they had finished third in their UEFA Champions League section behind Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur – the first time the Nerazzurri had failed to progress from their group in nine UEFA Champions League campaigns. • History repeated itself this season as Inter could only manage another third place in their UEFA Champions League group, a closing home defeat to Barcelona scuppering their chances and leaving them with seven points – one fewer than in the previous campaign. • Victory over Ludogorets took Inter into the UEFA Europa League round of 16 for the fourth time, and the win against Getafe ended a run of three straight eliminations at that stage of the competition. This is their first UEFA Europa League semi-final, though they reached the last four of the UEFA Cup on seven occasions; they won four and lost three, with a defeat in the most recent, against Feyenoord in 2001/02 (0-1 h, 2-2 a). The Nerazzurri won the UEFA Cup three times – in 1990/91, 1993/94 and 1997/98. • Inter's all-time record in UEFA semi-finals is W8 L5, the most recent, in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League, resulting in a 3-2 aggregate victory for José Mourinho's side against Barcelona (3-1 h,0-1 a) that preceded a 2-0 win against Bayern München in the Madrid final. • Inter have won only five of their 20 UEFA competition matches away to German clubs (D8 L7), but their two UEFA Europa League matches in Germany this month against Getafe and Bayer Leverkusen both ended in victory. Shakhtar • Shakhtar won the Ukrainian league in 2018/19, claiming the title for the 12th time and also completing a domestic double for the third season in a row, which gave them a third successive appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stage – and 14th in all. • The Pitmen picked up just one victory in the group stage this season, 2-1 against Atalanta in Inter's San Siro stadium with an added-time winner on Matchday 2. They then drew three games in succession, two against Dinamo Zagreb (2-2 h, 3-3 a) and the third, 1-1, away to a Manchester City side who had beaten them 3-0 in Kharkiv on Matchday 1.

The victory over Basel also made it two successes in as many quarter-finals, but in their one previous UEFA Europa League semi-final, against Sevilla in 2015/16, they were beaten 5-3 on aggregate (2-2 h, 1-3 a). • The Ukrainian side were, however, victorious in their only other European semi-final, defeating local rivals Dynamo Kyiv 3-2 on aggregate in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup (1-1 a, 2-1 h) en route to winning the trophy in Istanbul with a 2-1 extra-time victory against Werder Bremen. • Shakhtar have won six of their 13 UEFA matches in Germany (D1 L6), including both this season against Wolfsburg and Basel. Like Inter, they are undefeated in this season's UEFA Europa League (W4 D1). Links and trivia • Lukaku has scored in his last nine UEFA Europa League appearances – the first five for Everton in 2014/15 and four for Inter this term – setting a competition record. He has notched 12 goals during that run and has 17 in the competition as a whole, matching the UEFA Cup tally of his compatriot Erwin Vandenbergh. One more will make him Belgium's all-time top scorer in the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League. • Although Lukaku scored in both of Everton's games against Dynamo Kyiv in the 2015/16 round of 16, his club lost the tie to their Ukrainian opponents 6-4 on aggregate. • Inter coach Antonio Conte was in charge of Juventus when they drew 1-1 at home and won 1-0 away against Shakhtar in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League group stage. • Shakhtar's Taison scored against another Italian club, Napoli, in a 2-1 win in Kharkiv on Matchday 1 of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League. • Barella made his international debut for Italy in a 1-1 friendly draw against Ukraine in Genoa on 10 October 2018. , Mykola Matviyenko, , and substitutes Taras Stepanenko and Serhiy Kryvtsov all played for the visitors. • Inter's Ashley Young was in the England side that knocked Ukraine out of UEFA EURO 2012 with a 1-0 win in Donetsk in the final group game. Pyatov and Konoplyanka were starters for the defeated co-hosts. • Inter finished runners-up in Serie A in 2019/20, one point behind champions Juventus, thanks to a final-day 2-0 win at third-placed Atalanta. They will return to the UEFA Champions League group stage next season. • Shakhtar retained the title with a landslide triumph in 2019/20, finishing 23 points above second-placed Dynamo Kyiv. They too are guaranteed a place in the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League group stage. • Both clubs go into this match high on confidence, Inter having lost just one of their last 16 matches in all competitions and Shakhtar only one of their last 15, winning 12 of them. Penalty shoot-outs • Inter's record in four UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W2 L2: 5-4 v Celtic, 1971/72 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi final 3-4 v Aston Villa, 1994/95 UEFA Cup first round 5-3 v Grazer AK, 1996/97 UEFA Cup second round 1-4 v Schalke, 1996/97 UEFA Cup final • Shakhtar's record in two UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W0 L2: 1-4 v Club Brugge, 2002/03 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round 2-4 v Young Boys, 2016/17 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round The coaches • A combative and versatile midfielder, Conte is most commonly associated with Juventus, where he spent 13 seasons as a player, winning a treasure trove of trophies including the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League. He also coached the club to three successive Serie A titles between 2012 and 2014, going on to take charge of Italy for two years, including the UEFA EURO 2016 finals, and then leaving for Chelsea, where he won the Premier League and FA Cup before being replaced by compatriot Maurizio Sarri. After a year's sabbatical, Conte was appointed as Inter boss in May 2019. • Appointed Shakhtar Donetsk head coach in June 2019, Luís Castro replaced his compatriot Paulo Fonseca – a move he had also previously made back in 2014 when he stepped in as an interim replacement for the current Roma boss at Porto. A right-back, he spent most of his 17-year playing career in the lower leagues, and he also made a relatively discreet start in coaching before joining top-flight Penafiel in 2004. He was on Porto's coaching staff for a
