Objective

* Development of assistive, intelligent technologies, tools, systems and spaces for employment and adaptation of workplaces, enabling disabled people to realise their full working potential.

Research, development and demonstration projects should explore the possibilities offered by new technologies, advanced robotics and innovative work organisation, within a framework of ambient intelligence in order to enhance work opportunities and workplace integration for people with disabilities.

Giving disabled people greater access to the world of work is an essential element in reducing their social exclusion and increasing their welfare and independence. At the same time, increasing the participation of disabled people in the workforce has been highlighted in the EU Employment Strategy as a factor which will contribute to achieving the Lisbon objective of creating the world’s most dynamic and competitive Information Society in Europe by 2010.

Previous RTD in IST has made in-roads into this area and these efforts should be updated and extended, making the best use of technological advances and responding to workplace and management innovations.

This domain should be covered by STREPs and Integrated Projects.

To enhance the possibilities of uptake of research results, social partner organisations and industry should be strongly encouraged to participate in a Network of Excellence addressing this domain.
