Dear Parent/Guardian and

Welcome to ProStart I! This course introduces students to restaurant and foodservice concepts not found in more traditional programs. Students will develop culinary skills in nutrition, breakfast production, sandwich makings, salads, vegetable and fruit preparation and garnishing. In addition to the food preparation, topics such as controlling foodservice cost, marketing and branding of food products and restaurants are also covered. Paid and unpaid work experience (400 hours over a 2-year process) is part of the ProStart Certification process. A $5 Foods fee is charged by Onslow County Schools to cover supplies and equipment.

Student will be required to participate in several “out of school” activities. We will be preparing some of the food for the Century Club’s Toast of the Coast on October 5 There will be more activities later but dates have not been finalized. The hours for these types of activities will go toward their 400 work hours required for the ProStart certification.

Report cards will be distributed every six weeks, along with progress reports midway through the grading periods. Parent/Guardian input is always welcome. Please call the office to schedule conferences (910-326-4300).

Materials Needed: Two-inch, three-ring binder for storing papers, pen and pencil.

Grades will be based on tests, class work and labs. Students are responsible for all work missed. Parents may request assignments be sent home if the student will be absent for an extended period of time.

Classroom rules are posted. Students are expected to be respectful and display good manners. They are also expected to ask questions, follow directions, and be prepared for class. For inappropriate behavior, students may receive a warning and parent contact. Further options for discipline include detention and in-school suspension. Please read the Swansboro High School Student Handbook for details.

Please fill out your contact information on the included card and have your student return it to me as quickly as possible. I will be sending weekly emails to share the activities of the class. If you need to contact me, please call the school at 326 – 4300 and leave a message or email me at [email protected].
