Resurrection of Our Lord: Easter

Reverend Michelle Townsend de López,

Presiding and Preaching

Introduction

"This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” God has indeed raised from the dead the one who was put to death "by hanging him on a tree." Alleluia! God allows Jesus to appear "to us who were chosen by God as witnesses" in holy baptism and invites us to eat and drink at the table of the risen Christ. Alleluia!

The Elders serving today are Craig Dent, Matthew Harris,

Amy Jandrisevits and Marian Wasierski.

ORDER FOR CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who brings us safely through the sea, who gives us water from the rock, who leads us into the land of milk and honey.

C: Amen.
P: Let us come into the light, the revealing and healing light of God.

(Silence is kept for reflection.

P: God of grace and glory,
C: You have brought us through the night of sin into the light of Jesus' resurrection.

Yet our lives are still shadowed by sin. Make us alive in Christ, O God. Make us new as you make all things new. Rescue us from evil and the gloom of sin, renew us in grace, and restore us to living in your holiness, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen.

P: Rejoice with all creation around God's throne! The light of the risen Christ puts to

flight all evil deeds, washes away sin, restores innocence to the fallen, casts out hate,

brings peace, and humbles earthly pride. Jesus Christ loves you and + frees you from

your sins by his blood. To him be glory and dominion forever and ever!
C: Amen.

Gospel Acclamation “Jesus, Remember Me” #48, LMGM

GOSPEL Luke 24:13-49

Evidently expecting too find Jesus’ corpse, some of his women followers go to the tomb with embalming spices. After a perplexing encounter with the empty tomb and angelic visitors, the women become the first to proclaim the amazing news of resurrection.

Hymn of the Day

WITNESS OF FAITH

C: I believe in God the Creator, who made me and all things, who set me on my path in this world.
I believe in God the Savior, who is one with the Creator, who rescued me and all creation from the depredations of our violations against God and creation. This man, Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, walked a path through this world, taking on human form having been born of a woman through the power of the Holy Spirit. He lived and worked in this world among people just like me. He walked God's path to death on a cross, and rose from the dead to open our pathway to eternal life.
I believe in God the Holy Spirit, my counselor and guide, who is one with the Creator and the Christ, who through the body and blood of Jesus brings me into communion with all people, past, present and future; who calls me to walk a sacred way of life through this world, caring for creation and the people I meet on the way, loving them, helping them, welcoming them without prejudice, being God's hands and feet in the world.

OFFERTORY HYMN

Offertory Prayer

E: Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth.

C: Day by day you shower us with blessings. As you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to those in need, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

DIALOGUE

P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

PREFACE

P: It is indeed right and our duty and joy that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ, whose suffering and death gave salvation to all. You gather your people around the tree of the cross, transforming death into life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join them saying:

SANCTUS

C: Holy, holy, holy lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Words of Institution

P: The love of God flows among us: a never-ending stream, cascading down, running joyfully through our lives, washing us clean, filling our souls with the life-giving waters of salvation from Christ Jesus, the source of all life and the fount of all nourishment. For in the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ, took the bread, and after giving thanks, blessed it, broke it, giving it to all to eat saying, "This is my body which is broken for you." After the supper, taking the cup, he blessed it and gave it to all to drink saying, "This is the new covenant in my blood which is shed for you." As we have died with Christ so have we risen with him. Remembering this life saving grace and resurrection, we join with all creation in praising your name, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Benedict the African, confessor, died 1589

Albrecht Dürer, died 1528; Matthias Grünewald, died 1529; Lucas Cranach, died 1553; artists
These great artists revealed through their work the mystery of salvation and the wonder of creation. Dürer's work reflected the apocalyptic spirit of his time. Though he remained a Roman Catholic, he was sympathetic to Martin Luther's reforming work. Grünewald's paintings are known for their dramatic forms, vivid colors, and depiction of light. Cranach's work includes many fine religious examples and several portraits of Martin Luther. Cranach was also widely known for his woodcuts.
