Nominet Trust – Digital Edge Programme (UK) – has announced that the next advisory closing date for its Digital Edge programme is 27th November 2013. The Digital Edge programme aims to support projects that use new technology to engage young people in new, more meaningful and relevant ways and enable their participation in building a more realistic society. Not-for-profit organizations can apply e.g. schools, PTAs, universities or other educational establishments. There is no upper or lower funding as the Trust like to encourage applicants to be realistic about what they need to achieve their project objectives.

Previous projects supported through the Trust include: a primary school which received funding towards the cost of printed material to raise awareness to parents, children and the community of internet risks and safety measures; and an educational theatre projects to help young people better understand and address issues around cyber bullying. The funding has to be made for music education that is beyond statutory national curriculum music teaching. The Foundation cannot fund retrospectively, if schools have already purchased their instruments or if they do before their application has been approved. The closing date is 5th February 2014. See: www.emimusicfoundation.com for more details.

Virgin Money Announces National Rollout of its Make £5 Grow Scheme (UK) – Virgin Money has announced that it is reaching out to primary schools across the UK with the national roll-out of its successful Make £5 Grow scheme.

The Make £5 Grow scheme is very simple and is already a success in the North East and North West. The enterprise initiative is designed to help draw out those important entrepreneurial skills in primary schools pupils, combined with some basics of financial education. The scheme is expanding across the country. For those schools wishing to take part, Virgin Money will help make this possible by providing an interest-free loan of £5 for every participating pupil, up to a maximum of £250 per school, for 50 pupils. Pupils are encouraged to form small teams and pool their money to create a small business and develop products or services they can sell. Teachers have found the programme to be flexible, having used it alongside the National Curriculum in core subjects including English and maths, PSHE, citizenship, design technology and art and design.
