Course Description:

Social Studies in Grade 6 uses the core disciplines of geography and economics to develop and draw relationships and understandings about social/cultural, political and historic aspects of life in the Eastern Hemisphere. Text Titles:

1. Main Text: Discovering Our Past: A History of the World by Jackson J. Spielvogel, Phd. Macmillan/ McGraw Hill, 2013.

2. Supplemental Classroom Readings:

Ancient Civilizations , Allyn and Bacon, Inc.

Greek and Roman Civilizations , Allyn and Bacon, Inc.

Medieval Civilizations , Allyn and Bacon, Inc.

3. Periodical- Junior Scholastic- issues from 2003 through the present year.

Homework Policy:

Homework will be assigned on a regular basis and will either be collected or checked. It should be done using complete sentences, restating the question and with the proper heading to ensure that full credit is given. (Maximum 5 points). The maximum credit that can be earned for late assignments is 3 points (out of 5).Homework assignments can be upgraded (corrected and turned back in for a higher grade).

Grading Policy:

1.Test grades, quiz grades, and projects- will all be averaged together as 75% of the grade for each quarter.

*Quizzes- Will be weighted 1 time towards determining the average.

*Tests- Will be weighted2 times towards determining the average. They will be given at the completion of each unit of study.

* Projects- will count as a test grade (weighted 2 times).

2.Homework/ Classwork : Will count as 25% of the grade for each quarter.

3. All graded assignments will be returned to students initially. Homework and classwork assignments should be used for study purposes for the unit exams, and tests, quizzes and projects are sent home for parent review and signature. All graded work is eventually returned to student class folders and serves as a portfolio of their work for the year.

Make Up Policy:

All students must make up tests and quizzes within 1 week of their legalabsence. Please refer to the school’s Attendance Policy for information about legal/ illegal absences. Remember that it is the student's responsibility to make up work that they've missed.

Tardiness and Preparation:

Students must attend class on time and be prepared with the appropriate materials. These include their notebook, assignment book, pen, pencil and textbook.

Extra Help:

Students may stay after school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for extra help. The forty minute sessions begin immediately after school.
