Welcome to Biology B!

Biology B is a one trimester, lab based science course. Completion (passing) of Biology B is required for high school graduation. In order to be successful in Biology you will need attend class regularly, participate in class activities, ask questions, complete daily homework assignments and study for tests.

Materials

You will be expected to bring the following materials to class every day:

·  Biology Folder/Binder (50 cents per folder or provide your own)

·  Pen or Pencil

·  Highlighter

·  Red Checking Pen

Classroom Rules

1.  Arrive at class on time and prepared with the following items:

·  Biology Folder/Binder

·  Pen or Pencil

·  Red Checking Pen and Highlighter

·  Any assigned homework

2.  Be respectful of each other, the teacher and the classroom.

3.  Listen to and follow directions the first time they are given.

4.  Participate actively in class discussion and activities.

Consequences (if you choose to break a rule)

1.  Warning from the teacher.

2.  Detention before or after school (length of time varies based on the offense).

3.  Teacher or student calls home to speak with parent.

4.  Student is referred to the administration for discipline.

Severe disruptions or violation of the School Code of Conduct: Student sent immediately to the administration.

Rewards (if you choose to follow the rules)

1.  Great Job Tickets (daily)

2.  Great Job Ticket Winners (weekly)

3.  Success in chemistry and a sense of accomplishment (ongoing throughout the trimester)

Classroom Policies

1.  Teacher Availability: I am available for extra help and make-up tests/labs at 7 am in Room 401 on a daily basis. If this does not work for you, speak with me individually to set up an appointment at another time.

2.  Passes: You will receive four passes each trimester. These pay be used to excuse you to your locker or the restroom or to excuse a late homework assignment. The assignment must be completed and turned in with the pass.

3.  Absences: If you are absent you will receive a packet of work from me upon your return. You are responsible for arranging times to get help with confusion or to make up tests or labs. The number of days you are absent is equal to the number of days you have to make up the work.

4.  Tests and Quizzes: Tests and quizzes cannot be retaken. If you are absent on the day of a test or quiz, you will have one week to make up the test or quiz once you return.

5.  Cell Phones and I-Pods etc: These are not to be used in the classroom unless specifically stated, during a specific activity. These means the headphones should not be in your ears either!

6.  Food and Beverage: Food and beverage other than water are not allowed in the classroom.


Grading

You will accumulate points in the following areas:

1.  Folder Checks (At the end of each unit—do not throw away old work!)

2.  Homework (Late work is accepted in the following class period only for half credit OR with a late pass)

3.  Class and Lab Work (Done in class)

4.  Assessments (Tests, Quizzes and Projects)

·  Grading Scale: A 100-90% B 89-80% C 79-70% D 69-60%

·  Final Grade: The work done over the 12 week trimester will count as 80% of your final grade. There will be a cumulative final exam that will count for the remaining 20% of your final grade.

Information for Parents and Guardians

·  Biology B is a challenging course and successful completion is required for high school graduation. Therefore, it is important that your child focus a significant amount of attention towards this course.

·  You can expect that your child will have Biology homework every night.

·  I send a weekly email through Parent Connect (Zangle) to all parents and guardians with active email addresses. This email contains a description of what we will be doing in the upcoming week and also announces upcoming tests, quizzes and projects. Please confirm that your email address is up to date in Parent Connect in order to receive this email.

·  Every day when students enter my classroom they complete a “warm-up” which includes writing down the daily activities and the homework assignment. If you want to know what your student did in class or needs to do for homework, ask to see this warm-up sheet.

·  Every Friday students receive a weekly agenda that lists daily activities and homework assignments for the upcoming week. If you anticipate a busy schedule or an absence on a particular day, ask to see this agenda to help your student plan ahead and manage his/her time effectively.

·  I am available for extra help and make-up tests/labs at 7 am in Room 401 on a daily basis. If this does not work for your child, encourage him/her to speak with me individually to set up an appointment at another time.
