Job Description

REPORTS TO: Pastor EFFECTIVE DATE: August 2017FLSA STATUS: Part-time, non-exempt SUPERSEDES: December 1, 2016

PRIMARY FUNCTION OF THIS POSITION: The Coordinator of Youth Ministry is responsible for the primary leadership in the design and implementation of the youth ministry program for middle school and high school age youth (6-12 grades)for Epiphany Parish and Sacred Heart, Manly.

JOB SCOPE: Position encounters both recurring work situations and occasional variations and questions. Incumbent operates from general directions, but also determines own practices and procedures, performing with moderate supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: (The essential functions/major responsibilities listed are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.   1. Programming
  2. Develops programming options specific to adolescents as stated in “Renewing the Vision” which includes advocacy, catechesis, community life, evangelization, leadership development, justice and service, pastoral care, and prayer and worship.
  3. Develop an Adult Advisory Committee for Youth Ministry to plan and implement parish programs and to engage adults in our youth ministry program.
  4. Work with the Coordinators of Faith Formation to organize and coordinate local faith formation opportunities for adolescents.
  5. Promotes faith formation opportunities for adolescents offered at the regional, diocesan, and national levels.
  6. Plan, develop and implement a schedule of social opportunities for the youth to form community identity and establish peer relationships within their parish community.
  7. Plan, develop and implement a schedule of service activities for the youth in order to develop their sense of responsibility to and awareness of the needs of the parish community and the Diocesan church community and the larger social community.
  8. Keep youth and parents informed of Diocesan programs, social, service and retreat opportunities through distribution of a calendar of scheduled events.
  9. Administrative
  10. Manage an annual budget for youth ministry.
  11. Maintain current records on all youth participating in programs and all adult leaders.
  12. Prepare or assist with a yearly calendar for the program.
  13. Organize and supervise suitable fundraising activities.
  14. Establish goals and a growth plan for youth ministry.
  15. Provide youth ministry information to Epiphany Parish and Sacred Heart, Manly.
  16. Support and endorse diocesan and pastoral council and faith formation commission policies.
  17. Use appropriate technology and parish websites to publicize youth ministry.
  18. Supervisory
  19. Recruit volunteers and adult leaders to facilitate youth ministry, maintain adequate supervision and guarantee safety of youth at all times.
  20. Provide appropriate in-service training and formation of volunteers.
  21. Maintain a Youth Ministry Advisory Panel (adults representing parishes) to give direction, vision, and oversight over youth ministry programming.
  22. Maintain a Youth Council (youth representing parishes and youth concerns).
  23. Obtain, when necessary, parental support and consent for activities, in particular those involving travel outside the parish boundaries.
  24. Establish strong relationship of trust with parents of our youth.
  25. Spirituality and Prayer Leadership
  26. Prepare or assistwith liturgical celebrations for youth and families.
  27. Engage youth into the liturgical life of their parish community including parish ministries where appropriate.
  28. Staff Responsibilities
  29. Collaborate with pastoral staff to integrate youth ministry into the parish.
  30. Meet regularly with pastoral staff for planning and integration of youth ministry programs.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform satisfactorily each essential duty. The requirements listed below represent required knowledge, skill and/or abilities.

Required:

  1. Active member of the Roman Catholic Church. Knowledge/ability to share Catholic faith with youth.
  2. Paraprofessional helping/counseling listening skills, crisis intervention and referral skills, group processing and facilitation skills.
  3. The ability/experience to design and implement a variety of youth oriented programs.
  4. Ability to work with parents and children of all ages.
  5. Participate in ongoing formation and educational opportunities to keep current on trends in youth and catechetical ministry.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  1. BA in Theology/Religious Education or related educational field preferred OR certificate in ministry or theology from a Catholic institution of higher learning OR working toward a BA degree.
  2. Proven participation and continuing updating of the Virtus Safe Environment Program sponsored through the diocese.

COMMUNICATION/CLIENT CONTACT: Contacts are normally made inside and outside the Parishes including opportunities in area schools. With the great number of area public schools, it will be unrealistic to expect regular contact in every school, so contact through parish to youth whether attending public or Catholic schools is of vital importance. Contacts frequently contain confidential/sensitive matters.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Entails frequent evening and weekend work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, talk, reach, sit, finger, hear, handle and perform repetitive motions of the hands/wrists. Lifts and moves items up to 20 pounds.
