6th-8th Grade STEM

Welcome to STEM! I am excited to get to know you and to work together as a team to make sixth grade a wonderful year! As an educator, I am very concerned about your student’s level of responsibility regarding schoolwork and classroom behavior. Below are requirements for the coming year. Please read and discuss them carefully together.

Classroom Management in 5 steps

1. Arrive to class on time.

2. Get your things (something to write with and your STEM notebook).

3. Be ready by the bell.

4. If you have something to say, raise your hand.

5. Please do not leave until you have been instructed to do so.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is taken daily at 8:15 a.m. Instruction does begin at this time; therefore promptness is very important to minimize disruptions in the learning environment. Your child is late after the bell rings if he/she is not in class, ready to begin. Being in the hallway when the bell rings will result in a tardy.

Expectations

We will be using the STEM process to create, design, build, test and improve different designs. Each day will start with a short explanation of what we will be doing. The rest of the class time will be used to work on student projects. Some days, students will be workin on their own, other days, they will be working in groups. Group work is important in the STEM process and students will have a lot of practice. I expect students to try to work in groups as solo work isn’t always an option. I mainly use the "Remind App" to remind students of quizzes, tests, and important dates that are coming up. This is a free app that can be downloaded on iTunes or Google Play. I also update my website on Monday for the upcoming week. Please keep in mind that things change and lessons may extended or shortened. I expect my STEM students to take responsibility for their work, especially when they are absent.

Late Work

Students have 2 weeks to turn in any missing assignments within 2 weeks of the due date and receive up to 100% credit. If an assignment is not turned in, a "0" will be given and we will move on. I strongly believe that it is not about how much work that can be turned in at the end of a term but the quality of the work that is turned in as required. I will not extend due dates unless there are extreme circumstances. Each student is held accountable for all work. It is much easier to do required work on time than it is to play catch up.

When You Are Sick

If you are sick, please notify me and send someone in to get your work. It is extremely difficult to catch up with work after you have missed instruction for two or three days (or more). You will be expected to keep up with ongoing work, when you return, as well as make up the work that you missed. I will allow one day extra for every day you were sick to get your work in. You can also check the class website.
