INTRODUCTION

Warden Green welcomed everyone to the meeting and announced the upcoming DOCR Staff and Family Picnic on October 15, 2005. It is a fun day of activities at Ridge Road Park in Germantown. Anyone from the community group is welcome to come.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

With the unimaginable devastation and tragedy from hurricane Katrina being in the forefront of everyone’s mind, Warden Green spoke of the increased push in our community to be prepared for disasters. A fold-out wallet card has been printed called, “Be Ready, Make a Plan.” Warden Green has ordered 500 for his staff (from our Office of Homeland Security). Samples were passed out. ONE-STOP WORK CENTER / MONTGOMERY WORKS PROJECT

We will be opening the first One-Stop Work Center in a County Jail anywhere in the United States. It will be a part of our re-entry initiative. It is the most important thing we have done in Montgomery County Corrections since we have opened the doors of the new facility. It is a program called ‘Re-Entry for All.’ It is a full scale re-entry program that is going to reach out to approximately 3 to 4 thousand people going out our doors. The inmate population assisted with funding this project. It will provide a County government supported identification card (Re-Entry I.D.) to be used in the community for after care services or employment. The inmates need more help getting connected to jobs. We are teaming up with the One-Stop Job Centers (centers in the County) by bringing it inside the facility as part of the Jail’s Re-Entry Work Center. Warden Green will give a tour of the One-Stop Work Center after the meeting.

MODEL LEARNING CENTER (MLC)

The MLC is coming along with preparations for accreditation.

An agreement has been reached with the Montgomery County Public Schools concerning Title I money and our Youthful Offenders Program. Barbara James explained that Title I money is government money that you have to apply for which can then be used to help the under 21 population (Youthful Offenders) who have special needs.

GANGS

Warden Green wants to plan a special presentation on gangs to be scheduled in the future. There are 74 verified gang members in our facility. The gang members know that if they do anything in this facility that resembles gang activity they will be charged criminally. We now have a designated gang coordinator. It has been found that it is very beneficial to us to have a full time, 24 hour a day, on call employee. With the added gang coordinator, it has allowed us to know immediately when a possible gang member has been arrested, before he enters the jail population.

The new Gang Coordinator, Tate Safford is available to speak to any group that makes a request. Requests can be made through Warden Green.

The next meeting (bi-monthly) will be a BREAKFAST MEETING Tuesday,
