BTB Field Maintenance

1) Field Preparation a. Tarps i. Remove weights (put outside fence along third-base line) ii. To prevent water from draining onto mound or home plate area, roll the tarp onto the PVC pipe. Roll the tarp for the mound from front to back. Roll the tarp for home plate toward the backstop. Once rolled, carry the pipe/tarps off field and place next to weights outside fence on third-base line. 1. carry (do not drag) the tarp to back of field or outside the fence and drain any water b. remove base plugs and put in dugout or storage bin/shed c. install bases d. chalk batters box and lines (don’t need a thick line!!) e. Unlock batting cage next to Neill 2 f. If field is wet, DO NOT USE DIAMOND DRY ON CLAY (mound, home plate area) as this will turn rock hard and require repaires!! g. If you are missing anything from the shed/bin or are running low on chalk, contact your site director (don’t wait until it is empty)!! 2) Between Games a. Rake and drag the field to level out any holes (so water won’t collect) i. Includes infield, mound, batters box b. DO NOT RAKE INTO THE GRASS i. Rake with the base line ii. Lightly rake along the edge of infield, pulling away from grass or parallel with grass – never towards the grass c. Remove clay from grass around mound and home plate i. Rake back onto mound, home plate ii. Pick-up chunks in grass and put back onto mound and home plate 3) After last game of night (Neill #2 and #3) a. Rake and drag field b. Fill in holes on pitching mound and tamp down. c. Fill in both batter’s boxes and area dug out by catcher and umpire. Tamp all that down. d. Cover mound and home plate area with tarp i. Make sure tarp is only on the dirt, not the grass ii. Put back weights and PVC pipes on top of tarp e. Clean-up garbage from both dugouts and bleacher areas f. Return items (rakes, tamper, bases, string line, chalker, etc.) neatly to shed/bins and lock-up. g. Lock all the equipment boxes (and test the locks) before leaving the field! i. YOU MUST ENTER THE COMBINATION FOR THE LOCK AND THEN PUSH IT LOCKED. WHILE HOLDING IT LOCKED, THEN SPIN THE DIALS. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY IT WILL REMAIN LOCKED. 4) After last game of night (Neill A and B) a. Rake and drag field. b. LEAVE THE BASES ON THE FIELD c. Return any equipment (rakes, chalker, etc.) to the equipment boxes at Neill 2 and 3. d.
