Course Synopsis: The Workplace Training Program is one of the Career Programs’ options designed to link school-based learning with extended work experience. The focus of Workplace Training is the incremental learning of job specific skills while reinforcing employability skill development. Workplace Training 10B is the second of three expanded work experience courses where students participate in a minimum of 120 hours of work experience in their chosen career field during Grades 10, 11 and 12. This course will enable students to build upon and refine their knowledge and skills learned in the previous course. Students who successfully complete Workplace Training 10B can choose to continue in Workplace Training 12C. Workplace Training enables students to complete high school graduation credits and gain the skills and knowledge required for future employment in their chosen career field. In addition to employability skills, job specific skills are identified and learning outcomes developed to support delivery of these skills.

Rationale: This course has been developed to enable students to continue to build upon knowledge and skills learned in Workplace Training 10A. Students will continue to practice and refine skills learned in their first Workplace Training course while developing new job specific skills and learning new workplace applications. Upon successful completion of the course requirements, students will be able to enrol in Workplace Training 10C.

Workplace Training Program is comprised of three courses, each a minimum of 120 hours of work experience, which focus on enabling students to develop knowledge and skills through incremental learning. Each course builds upon the knowledge and skills learned in the previous course.

Organizational Structure: It is difficult to identify exact hours that each unit will take as all units are intertwined throughout the student’s experience. All learning outcomes within these sections are interdependent.

Unit 1: Overview: Curriculum Organizers and Learning Outcomes

Organizer: Employability Skills
It is expected that students will:
·  Participate in the workplace as an entry-level employee
·  Learn job specific terminology
·  Demonstrate ability to communicate, written and/or verbal, using job specific language
·  Manage time efficiently to be a productive member of the workforce
·  Follow directions given by the workplace supervisor to work with others to complete tasks assigned
·  Take responsibility and show initiative for completing tasks assigned and meeting deadlines
·  Develop new and refine existing transferable skills
·  Demonstrate an understanding of workplace ethics and workplace etiquette
·  Build upon those skills practiced in Workplace Training 10A

It is expected that students will:
·  Identify and describe the type of work done and tasks performed while on work experience
·  Demonstrate employability skills while on work experience

·  Reflect on performance at workplace to identify personal strengths and challenges
·  Identify and demonstrate teamwork skills used while on work experience
·  Identify related school course curriculum knowledge and skills used while on work experience
·  Learn problem-solving skills

Unit 3: Overview: Curriculum Organizers and Learning Outcomes

Organizer: Job Specific Skills
It is expected that students will:
·  Work with the workplace supervisor to learn and develop knowledge and skills appropriate for industry-related entry level employment
·  Work with workplace supervisor to learn and develop knowledge and skills required to complete tasks assigned in the workplace
·  Demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills or increased levels of skills as existing ones are mastered
·  Increase responsibility as workload increases

Unit 4: Overview: Curriculum Organizers and Learning Outcomes

Organizer Workplace Health and Safety
It is expected that students will:
·  Apply hazard recognition and injury prevention skills in the workplace
·  Identify and analyze hazards and potential hazards in the workplace
·  Learn and apply job-specific workplace health and safety requirements and procedures
·  Learn and demonstrate knowledge of basic and job-specific workplace incident and accident response procedures and protocols
·  Demonstrate knowledge of workplace health and employee safety rights
·  Take responsibility for personal safety when performing new tasks

Instructional Component: Workplace supervisor, in partnership with CPAdvisors, will identify job-specific knowledge and skills that student will learn. Students will learn these skills through “on-the-job” training: direct instruction, indirect instruction, interactive instruction, independent instruction, modelling, practical creativity, group work.

Students will be required to complete a Reflection Document, Daily Work Record and Journal, and a Student Self Assessment.
