DIAGNOSIS, BIOTECHNOLOGY AND LABORATORY
Title of activity / Scope
Evaluation of the quality of NSP-ELISAs with samples from animals infected/vaccinated with foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) strains belonging to 4 serotypes / A total of 7 new NSP-ELISAs, commercially available or in development by laboratories or companies were evaluated with two serum panels (as described by the OIE FMD Ref Centre Panaftosa, Brasil, in the article of Campos et al., 2008, and by the OIE FMD Ref Centre at Pirbright, UK, in the article of Parida et al., 2007). This was done in full collaboration between the OIE CC Coda-Cerva, Ukkel-Belgium, and the OIE Reference Centre for FMD in Brescia, Italy.
Evaluation of the quality of serological assays against structural proteins of FMDV / The quality of the SP-ELISA and virus neutralisation test for the detection of antibodies against FMDV were evaluated by an interlaboratory comparision using field samples (N = 506). This was done in full collaboration between the OIE CC Coda-Cerva, Ukkel-Belgium, and the OIE Reference Centre for FMD in Brescia, Italy.
Development of diagostic serological kits for FMDV / To harmonise the quality and the outcome of serological tests to detect antibodies against FMDV and therefore the controle of FMD, post vaccination sera from cattle against the 7 serotypes of FMDV and taken 21 days post vaccination and 10 days post revaccination were provided in an amount of 50 ml each to a diagnostic kit producer in France for the development of serological kits in collaboration with CODA-CERVA as OIE CC and ANSES as National FMD Reference Centre for France.
Other:
Title of activity / Scope
Category: Vaccines.
Evaluation of the use of RT-PCRs for quality control testing of vaccines. / The blood of 100 cattle was checked after vaccination by real-time RT-PCR. The test detected the presence of vaccinal RNA. This might interfere with the determination of a viremia after infection and thus with the evaluation of the protective power of the vaccine. This vaccine RNA carriage appears to be short lasting. Therefore paired sampling procedures should be implemented to allow the discrimination between infectious virus and vaccine-derived RNA avoiding any misinterpretation.

ToR: To propose or develop methods and procedures that facilitate harmonisation of international standards and guidelines applicable to the designated specialty

2. Proposal or development of any procedure that will facilitate harmonisation of international regulations applicable to the surveillance and control of animal diseases, food safety or animal welfare

Proposal title / Scope/Content / Applicable area
The implementation of parallel testing using multiple real-time PCRs with similar characteristics to improve diagnosis in disease control or eradication programmes. / This was done in full collaboration between the OIE CC Coda-Cerva, Belgium, and the Laboratoire de Virologie et Hygiène & Microbiologie, Faculté des Sciences et Techniques, Mohammedia, Morocco and the Laboratoire Régional d’Analyses et de Recherches d’Oujda, Office National de Sécurité Sanitaire des Produits Alimentaires, Oujda, Morocco. / Surveillance and control of animal diseases
Food safety
Animal welfare
