BURLEY PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR

WORLD BIKE FOR BREATH CAMPAIGN

SEATTLE – A family committed to finding a cure for asthma will embark on a worldwide journey thanks to the Eugene-based company, Burley Design Cooperative. Starting in January 2003, Paula Holmes-Eber, her husband Lorenz, and their two daughters, Anya, age 11, and Yvonne, age 8, will cycle 15,000 miles through five continents and 25 countries to raise awareness and funds for asthma research and programs.

The family’s trip truly begins in Eugene this August as they take the most critical step on their journey, selecting the bike’s they will be riding across the world. Eugene-based Burley, maker of an extensive line of quality bicycles, donated two Duet tandems for the trip. On Friday, August 2nd Burley will hand deliver the bikes to the Ebers as they take their first test ride through the valleys of Eugene. The Ebers will be joined by ______on their inaugural ride.

“This is a family that does not let asthma slow them down,” General Manager Matt Purvis said about Burley Design Cooperative’s sponsorship of World Bike for Breath. “Burley is a company that encourages family bicycling; this trip by the Ebers shows the world that a family can stay healthy andbond more closely together by riding bikes.”

The Ebers and Burley’s Bike Product Manager selected two Duet tandems, one of Burley’s top-selling models, for the world trip. The bikes were custom designed for the Ebers.

“Burley’s commitment to this ride is really our launching point for raising awareness of what research and proper treatment can mean in the lives of asthma sufferers,” said Paul Holmes Eber. “The ability to be active and healthy and to take in a breath of air is something many of us take for granted. Hopefully a time will come when children everywhere can have that quality of life.”

The Ebers have created a 501 c3 organization, called World Bike for Breath, with the goal of raising $5,000,000 for asthma. Donated funds will be split equally between asthma research and programs for asthmatic children and their families. The three beneficiaries of the ride are The American Lung Association and The American Lung Association of Washington, The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and the AAFA Washington Chapter and International Asthma Services.

“Burley is excited about the opportunity to be involved with this world tour for asthma research and support of asthmatic children with poor medical care,” Purvis said.

Located in the heart of Eugene, Oregon’s bicycle-friendly Willamette Valley, Burley manufactures superior bicycle equipment, including bicycle trailers, trailercycles, tandems, recumbent bicycles and cycling raingear. The worker-owned company began in 1978 with four members and has since grown to an 85-member business.
