A RESOLUTION Honoring Aukram Burton Upon the Occasion of His Retirement

A RESOLUTION honoring Aukram Burton upon the occasion of his retirement.

WHEREAS, Aukram Burton was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied at the New England School of Photography; received a B.A. in art and a M.Ed. in instructional design from the University of Massachusetts, Boston; and completed a research fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Center for Advanced Visual Studies; and

WHEREAS, Aukram Burton has worked in the field of multicultural education for over 30 years. He is an educator, media artist, and media producer whose influence on the field of education and media studies is heralded not only in this Commonwealth, but in every community where Mr. Burton has shared his unique vision of the world; and

WHEREAS, Aukram Burton joined Jefferson County Public Schools in 1999 as the Diversity/Multicultural Education Specialist. He immediately made an indelible impact on the schools in that district, and his retirement will mark the end of a profound career that saw him change the lives of so many people; and

WHEREAS, Aukram Burton serves on many boards and commissions, including the Greater Louisville Alliance of Black School Educators, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, the Metropolitan Housing Coalition, YouthBuild Louisville, the Community Action Program, the Louisville Africa Forum, and the Association for International Educators National Association of Multicultural Education. He is the recipient of many awards and honors, including the Rev. George and Brunhilda Currington Award, the Molly Leonard Community Service Award, the Champion for Children Award, the Unsung Hero Award, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee, the Crystal Award at the National American Scene Awards, and in 2012, he was appointed Commissioner of the Louisville Human Relations Commission by Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer; and

WHEREAS, this honorable body hereby honors Aukram Burton upon his retirement as an educator and artist, and commends him for his extraordinary career. He is applauded for his work and service to humanity, commended for his diligent effort to make the Commonwealth and the city of Louisville better, and granted best wishes as he begins this new chapter of his life;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate hereby honors Aukram Burton upon his retirement, and offers him its sincerest commendation for his esteemed career in education and the media.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of Aukram Burton.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Gerald Neal for delivery.
