SYNOPSIS
Kosmos, a profoundly imaginative cinematic journey by celebrated Tukish film directorReha Erdem, will open in UK cinemas on June 15.
Kosmos is a thief who works miracles. He appears as if from nowhere, on the outskirts of a snow swept timeless border town, to rescue a local boy from drowning in the river. He is hailed as amiracle workerand the town’s local men folk go out of their way to make him feel at home.
Kosmos is an unusual man. He doesn't appear to eat or sleep and scales trees with animal like ability. When it becomes clear that he would rather steal than work to repay the hospitality they have shown him, thelocalssoon start to tire of their most recent inhabitant. He ruffles some more feathers when he declares that he is looking for love, setting his sightson the beautiful sister of the boy he saved. He begins a bizarre animalistic courtship with the youngwoman, involving bird calling from trees and rooftops.
Despite being weary of Kosmos's bizarre behavior, they cannot fail but noticehis special talent of curing the sick and many seek his magic powers. The villagers turn on him, however, when a young boy, who’s muteness he had cured, dies.Kosmos has no choice but to flee the town and head back in to the wilderness from where he came.
Turkish cinema has been on the rise over the past decade and Reha Erdem, alongside directors such as Nuri Bilge Ceylan and Fatih Akin, has been one of the main exponents of this new wave of cinema from Turkey. His previous films; Time And Winds and What Is A Human Anyway?, both won awards worldwide. Kosmos has followed in this tradition, winning awards both in Turkey and abroad.
