2016-17 Future S Grant: Things Are Looking up an Outdoor Art Studio Under the Oaks

2016-17 Future’s Grant: “Things are Looking Up” An Outdoor Art Studio Under the Oaks

Margaret Williams- Port Orange Elementary Art

Goal: My goal is to create an outdoor art studio where students can experiment with natural light and organic subject matter in a relaxing environment.

What will be done with my students: The students will begin the project learning about trees, leaves and shrubs in the outdoor patio area. Because each grade level will be producing their own art work, it is important to allow students time to investigate plants in their natural setting and be able to closely observe the details. Next, we will use the new convertible table/benches for discussions and studio time to create our plant compositions. The upper grade levels will be exploring trees from various points of view and investigate branch formations. The youngest students will be printing with actual leaves from the outdoor space. Because the area is permanent, it can be used for future art lessons as well as a learning space for other teachers.

Benefits to my students: Outdoor classrooms offer students a stimulating and interesting area for exploration, discussion and learning. Painting and drawing using natural light presents the students with a unique opportunity they just can’t get inside with fluorescent lighting. Outdoor learning provides all students with a chance to be in a different setting in the open air.

Budget narrative: Each bench can be converted into a table so students can easily use any media necessary to complete their projects. I am also ordering supply caddies, magnetic boards and magnets so we can quickly transition and work in windy weather.

Items:

5 convertible benches: 131.99 x 5= $659.95 (Amazon)

Supply caddies set of 6: $23.99 (Lakeshore)

Magnetic Easel boards 2 sets of 12: 136.28 (really good stuff.com)

Magnets/ set of 50 $4.62 x 3 = $13.86 (Blick)

Our outdoor art studio is finally complete and used by the entire school population. We began by using the space to investigate, sketch and draw trees from unique points of view. As you can see from the photos, the results were amazing. As the year progressed, we have used the outdoor art studio to experiment with natural light, have classroom discussions, and appreciate the weather while working. Many other classrooms enjoy the use of the space for special guests, lessons and free time. The kindergarten finished up the gardening space that surrounds the patio with flowers and native bushes. We are very proud of our outdoor classroom and look forward to its continued use in the years to come.
