Inspired by Dr. Denis Mukwege’s relentless commitment to healing the victims of sexual violence, not only as a surgeon who repairs flesh, but as a human being who approaches medicine from a holistic perspective by responding to the psycho-social wounds with compassionate care. The Echo Foundation devotes this year’s study to the power of the human spirit. Through the work of the Panzi Hospital, the City of Joy, and the Panzi Foundation, students across the globe learn from Dr. Mukwege’s unwavering example to care for those in need; every hour, every day. In these turbulent times when we are often alienated one from another by extremism and violence, where is the space for the human soul? How do we nurture the next generation of leaders so that we may create a powerful force for good in the midst of poverty, war, famine, and anguish? What is our collective obligation to create a compassionate world that honors and includes us all? Developed by Echo student interns, this curriculum offers educators and students alike a tool for learning about the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Denis Mukwege, his life, and work. Added to this, we take a look at gender issues and the culture of sexual violence in our society today. In the third section of our curriculum, we investigate global responsibility and the duty to protect when we witness injustice. We thank the Panzi Foundation for their partnership, through which we develop a connection to the women, men, and children of the Democratic Republic of Congo whose lives have been uplifted by the remarkable work of Dr. Mukwege. Over the course of two months, we had the amazing opportunity to research and collect a number of texts, graphs, photos, videos, and activities. We narrowed down the resources we found to create a curriculum that impacts students and inspires positive change in our communities. Reading the speeches and accounts of Dr. Mukwege, we were in awe at the incredible activism and work he has done. The use of rape and sexual violence as a tool of war so often goes unspoken. The shame accompanying victims of these crimes prevents them from speaking out, and when they do, their voices are so often silenced. We hope this curriculum will inspire dialogue among students about these topics that are often unaddressed. We want to share the stories of the women in the Democratic Republic of Congo who have been brutally injured. We want to share the stories of the children and men in the Congo who have also been affected by the wars, political turmoil, and kleptocracy. We want to share the stories of survivors worldwide who have been brave enough to speak out against injustice and the culture that perpetuates violence and toxic masculinity. We want to share all of these stories, and we want you to share yours. Whether it’s feeling objectified by being catcalled as you walk down the street, hearing a discriminatory or degrading joke, or reading a news story about rape and realizing something isn’t right, speak out. In order to make a change, we need to talk about these topics, even when it’s difficult, and especially when it’s difficult. That being said, we know the stories and subjects in this curriculum are very sensitive and can be distressing. We’ve made an effort to present the information in the most unbiased and empathic way possible. The topic of sexual violence doesn’t just affect women, it affects all of humanity. Rape as a weapon of war destroys communities, tears at the social fabric that connects people to one another, and terrorizes populations. We, as students and youth, are the next generation. We will be the next political leaders, the next teachers, the next fathers and mothers. We are this world’s future, and we have the power to create the world we want to live in. We’d like to thank Dr. John Cox, Mary Margaret Martin, Emily Houpt, Kayla Campion, Stacey Schanzlin, and Sarah Richman for their assistance in creating this curriculum.     29 July 2019 The Challenges of Winning Justice for Victims of Sexual Abuse in War and Peacekeeping. On April 23rd 2019, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted resolution 2467 on women, ​ ​ peace and security stating its concern over the slow progress in addressing and eliminating sexual violence in armed conflicts. Sexual violence in conflict as a topic has been gaining momentum over the last years, which led to two women’s rights advocates, Nadia Murad and Dr. Denis Mukwege, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018. The UN has used this momentum to push governments to adopt national action plans to fight conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV). However, as of April 2019, only 79 out of 193 UN member states have produced such a national action plan. The UNSC is to be commended for continuing to place pressure on member states to deal with this important issue. However, this latest resolution raises two important issues that remain insufficiently addressed: victims’ access to justice and the separation of sexual abuse by UN staff from CRSV. While resolution 2467 contains strong language condemning CRSV, the issue of sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) by peacekeepers is not addressed. Nor it is acknowledged in the resolution as being a form of sexual violence in conflict even though since 2010, no less than 188 allegations of SEA by peacekeepers have been reported to the UN. At the core of both CRSV and SEA is sexual abuse by people in positions of power. One of the main differences between the two concepts lies in who is perpetrating the violence: state and non-state actors or UN peacekeepers.

According to the arrest report, Heldenbrand, 42, stole the money from Simmons and office partner Dr. Ernest J. Gesiotto while she worked as their office manager and bookkeeper. She reportedly forged her name on their business checks and then deposited the funds into her personal banking account. Simmons told police that when he confronted Heldenbrand about the thefts, she admitted that she had committed the crimes over a period of about 1 1/2 years, which is the length of time she was employed there. Simmons reported this to the police Feb. 8. A police investigation revealed well in excess of 10 business checks of Simmons that had been made payable to cash, with Simmons' signature forged on them. They were endorsed "For Deposit Only" to the personal account of Heldenbrand and her husband.

    MEDIA RELEASE For immediate release Geneva, 12 June 2018 CONFLICT-RELATED SEXUAL VIOLENCE – TRANSLATING WORDS INTO ACTION In fifteen years of existence, TRIAL International has acquired an expertise in legal responses to sexual violence. Aware of the importance of good collaboration, the NGO has partnered with other civil society actors to gather practical tools for the assistance of victims. For its fifteenth anniversary, TRIAL International is organizing a high-level event on the topic of conflict-related sexual violence. Many actors of this field will gather in Geneva on 18 and 19 June – the International day for the elimination of conflict-related sexual violence – to focus on the advances these organizations have conquered. The objective is to compile their experience and share concrete solutions. “It is probably the first time that these NGOs, which have developed cutting-edge techniques or IT apps, show such willingness to collaborate. Each one will bring a piece of the puzzle to move forward, patiently and professionally, the fight against impunity for conflict-related sexual violence”, enthuses Philip Grant, Director of TRIAL International. EXPERTS WILL PRESENT THEIR VICTORIES The public event on 18 June will offer a panorama of the advances victims of conflict-related sexual violence have enjoyed in their access to justice. The United Nations Deputy High Commissioner to Human Rights Kate Gilmore and the Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations, Ambassador Valentin Zellweger, will deliver keynote speeches.

    Norwegian Nobel Committee, The Norwegian Nobel Institute NO-0255 Oslo, Norway 12 Sept 2018 Dear Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, 9 December 2018 will mark the 20th anniversary of the UN’s Declaration on Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) 1. It is an ideal and opportune moment to recognise and celebrate the efforts of these extraordinary individuals who despite threats of violence and unlawful imprisonment, harassment, intimidation, torture and assassination, continue to peacefully challenge injustice and call for the implementation and strengthening of the rule of law. Since 1998, over 3000 human rights defenders have been killed for defending the fundamental values enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the UN. In recognising the increasingly hostile environments globally, in which human rights defenders must work, the late Former Secretary-General to the United Nations, Kofi Annan, recently said: “To stand up for human rights requires courage, perseverance, vigilance and a strong foundation of knowledge and evidence. We need to be vigilant in the protection of human rights defenders, for when the defenders’ rights are violated, all our rights are injured.” 2 In the same vein and emphasising the critical role that human rights defenders play in promoting and fostering stable democracies and sustainable peace, Permanent Representative of Norway to the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Ambassador Steffen Kongstad said: “Threats and attacks against human rights defenders may hamper the realisation of economic, social and cultural rights, undermining social cohesion, and ultimately stability and development.” 3 Despite this recognition and respect at the highest levels of the international community, human rights defenders are killed every day.

At Tuesday's city council meeting. City Attorney Robert Pritt announced that a state hearing officer ruled in favor of the city, recom- mending the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) issue a permit for the weir's construction. The recommendation will go on to Virginia B. Wetherell, secretary of the DEP, for final approval. Wetherell's decision could take anywhere from a month to five weeks, Pritt said. Producing Over the Moon Gennie Rim, Executive Producer, Glen Keane Productions Peilin Chou, Animation Film Producer, Netflix Producers Peilin Chou and Gennie Rim discuss the development and production of the recently premiered Netflix and Pearl Studios animated musical adventure, Over the Moon, directed by the legendary Oscar winner Glen Keane, and co-directed by Oscar winner John Kahrs. In the film, a bright young girl fueled with determination and a passion for science, Fei Fei, builds a rocket ship to the moon to prove the existence of the legendary Chinese Moon Goddess, Chang’e. Executive Summary In the four months since The New York Times shone a spotlight on sexual harassment allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, a sea change has occurred in the workplace. Dozens of high-profile men have been accused of sexual misconduct, bringing them public shame and often dismissal. Female employees, emboldened by the growth of the #MeToo movement, are speaking up and reporting incidents in growing numbers. Employers are rewriting policy and training handbooks to forestall harassment, seeking to get in front of a problem that has already resulted in nearly $700 million in settlements over a six-year period. Investors are pressuring companies to act and are considering harassment issues as they make investment decisions. Yet some express concern that the changing climate may create unintended consequences that could harm the intended beneficiaries. Some key takeaways include: More than one-third of human resources professionals said they have taken a sexual harassment complaint in the past year. While high-profile fields such as entertainment and mass media have gotten the most publicity, most of the complaints filed with federal authorities are in less glamorous industries such as retail, manufacturing and health care. Clauses requiring employees to accept arbitration and confidentiality when they file harassment complaints are drawing fire from critics who say the practice makes it harder to address the problem.
