Davis, Marquette University and University of Amsterdam 2015 STOREP Conference Plenary Lecture Shifting Boundaries: Economics in the Crisis and the Challenge of Interdisciplinarity June 11-13, 2015 Abstract: This paper examines the implications of Chicago School economist Edward Lazear’s 2000 defense of economics imperialism using standard trade theory. It associates that defense with interdisciplinarity or the idea that the sciences are relatively autonomous, but treats this defense as a mask for a more conventional imperialist strategy of promoting Chicago School neoclassicism. Lazear’s argument actually created a dilemma for Chicago regarding how it could espouse interdisciplinarity while operating in a contrary way. I argue that the solution to this dilemma was for neoclassicism to rebuild economics imperialism around neoclassicism as a theory that sees the world in its own image in a performative manner. This strategy, however, suffers from a number of problems, which upon examination ultimately lead us to multidisciplinarity or the idea that the sciences can have transformative effects on one another. This latter conception can be associated with a complexity economics approach as an alternative view of the relation between the sciences. The paper argues that this view provides a basis for pluralism in economics. -

Even so, there is no denying that Durkheim’s name appears with vast ly less frequency in the literature on these topics than is true of Marx and W eber, sociology’ s other founding fathers . -

Structuralism 1. The nature of meaning or understanding. A. The role of structure as the system of relationships Something can only be understood (i.e., a meaning can be constructed) within a certain system of relationships (or structure). For example, a word which is a linguistic sign (something that stands for something else) can only be understood within a certain conventional system of signs, which is language, and not by itself (cf. the word / sound and “shark” in English and Arabic). A particular relationship within a شرق combination society (e.g., between a male offspring and his maternal uncle) can only be understood in the context of the whole system of kinship (e.g., matrilineal or patrilineal). Structuralism holds that, according to the human way of understanding things, particular elements have no absolute meaning or value: their meaning or value is relative to other elements. Everything makes sense only in relation to something else. An element cannot be perceived by itself. In order to understand a particular element we need to study the whole system of relationships or structure (this approach is also exactly the same as Malinowski’s: one cannot understand particular elements of culture out of the context of that culture). A particular element can only be studied as part of a greater structure. In fact, the only thing that can be studied is not particular elements or objects but relationships within a system. Our human world, so to speak, is made up of relationships, which make up permanent structures of the human mind. B. The role of oppositions / pairs of binary oppositions Structuralism holds that understanding can only happen if clearly defined or “significant” (= essential) differences are present which are called oppositions (or binary oppositions since they come in pairs). -

Nor for Quotation/Not for Circulation 1- A Brave New World? “The fear has even been expressed by some that technological change would in the near future not only cause increasing unemployment, but that eventually it would eliminate all but a few jobs, with the major portion of what we now call work being performed automatically by machines.”i It may come as a surprise that these words were written in 1966, in the report of the United States Presidential Commission on “Technology, Automation, and Economic Progress.” Established in 1964, the Commission had the following as a key recommendations to deal with the uneven benefits of technological change and with the future impact of automation on jobs: “Technological change and productivity are primary sources of our unprecedented wealth, but many persons have not shared in that abundance. We recommend that economic security be guaranteed by a floor under family income.”ii This recommendation is not that different, in either substance or motivation, from the current interest in establishing a universal basic income, which has been defended by some as a way of dealing with a future in which automation and artificial intelligence will render the need for labor redundant.iii Of course, any discourse on technological change is always ambivalent. There is no questioning that scientific progress and technological innovation have been underlying drivers of the improvements in the standards of living throughout the history of humanity. -

(Gadamer 1990, p. 264, 1989, p. 259) Half a century ago, Ludwig von Mises concluded an essay with a title very similar to the present one by addressing the proponents of mathematical economics thus: ‘If it may some day be necessary to reform economic theory radically this change will not take its direction along the lines sug- gested by the present critics. The objections of these are thoroughly refuted forever’ (1942, p. 253).1 Mises’s first statement was factually wrong; this does not mean, however, that the second one was incorrect as well. Indeed, it seems to me that the problem of the current mainstream, math- ematical, usually neoclassical approach to economics2 is two-fold. It is flawed both practically and theoretically: practically because it does not deliver, theoretically because it rests on premises that are problematic at best, and extrapolates from them by equally questionable means. The argu- ment by its protagonists has been to excuse practical problems by pointing to theoretical truth-value, and theoretical ones by pointing to practical success. This chapter concentrates on the theoretical problems. It rests on the assumption, rather than tries to demonstrate, that mathematical econom- ics does not deliver; if one feels that it does, then one need not read on. But of course the theoretical problems have a practical connection (see Kant 1992, pp. 23–5), because the purpose of pursuing economic scholarship is not to create an aesthetically pleasing theoretical system, but rather to say something meaningful and consequential, directly or indirectly, about reality. -

Social Sciences and Humanities in Research on Space Exploration: Results of a Bibliometric Analysis E S P I PERSPECTIVES 45 Social Sciences and Humanities in Research on Space Exploration: Results of a Bibliometric Analysis Roberta DAVERI, Research Intern and Gerhard THIELE, Resident Fellow, ESPI Space exploration is an area of research and activity that is usually associated with natural sciences. However, many key questions regarding space exploration concern the social sciences or the humanities, i.e. questions with an epistemological background. Therefore it is obvious that contributions from social sciences and the humanities are instrumental when trying to understand the meaning and impact of space exploration on humankind in its full richness. While the usefulness, even the necessity, of such a multidisciplinary approach is beyond any doubt, it is not clear how well research in the area of social sciences and the humanities is established today in the field of space exploration. This Perspective presents the results of a bibliometric analysis on the research, which has been performed in this field until today. The starting point of this analysis was two books on Humans in Outer Space, which have been published by ESPI in 2009 and earlier this year. The European Science Foundation (ESF), which played an essential role in publishing both books, supported this analysis especially with helpful discussions regarding the methodology and the definition of main questions. The analysis aims to highlight to what extent research on space exploration is being addressed by the social sciences and humanities or whether this multidisciplinary research is still just a subset within natural sciences. -

This is a fundamental problem in the field of social studies of science. The paper confronts this question here by showing vital determinants of science to explain the sources of social power and wealth creation by nations. Firstly, this study suggests a new general definition of science and scientific research that synthetizes previous concepts and endeavors to extend them: Science discovers the root causes of phenomena to explain and predict them in a context of adaptation of life to new economic and social bases, whereas scientific research is a systematic process, applying methods of scientific inquiry, to solve consequential problems, to satisfy human wants, to take advantage of important opportunities and/or to cope with environmental threats. In particular, science and scientific research are driven by an organized social effort that inevitably reflect the concerns and interests of nations to achieve advances and discoveries that are spread to the rest of humankind. -

BEN FINE The purpose of this article is primarily to situate the rise of the idea of ‘globalisation’ in terms of its broader intellectual context, with some emphasis on the relevance for ‘development’, an equally contested concept.1 In part, the aim is to provide an answer to the question that has recently been succinctly posed by David Harvey. He recognises that globalisation ‘is now one of the most hegemonic concepts for understanding the political economy of international capitalism. And its uses extend far beyond the business world to embrace questions of politics, culture, national identity, and the like. So where did this concept come from?’2 I offer a broad and partial answer to this question in the next section, arguing that ‘globalisation’ neatly captures two intellectual trends, the dual retreat from the excesses both of neoliberalism and of postmodernism. From preoccupation with deconstruction and semiotics across the social sci- ences, attention has increasingly been directed towards understanding the nature of contemporary capitalism as a system of power and conflict, of poverty and inequality, of environmental degradation, and so on. ‘Globalisation’ predomi- nantly represents a return in emphasis to the study of material realities other than as a system of signs. Interest has focused on how the world is organised and functions internationally and nationally, reflecting intellectual departure from a ‘virtual’ world of increasingly free and unconstrained markets. Such concerns have also reduced the appeal of neoliberalism, the idea that the world could and should be run as if a perfectly functioning set of markets with at most a light, facilitating touch by the state. -

David Stanford University & the University of Oxford [email protected] or [email protected] First version: March 2000 Second version: August 2004 This version: December 2007 SUMMARY This essay examines the economics of patronage in the production of knowledge and its influence upon the historical formation of key elements in the ethos and organizational structure of publicly funded open science. The emergence during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries of the idea and practice of “open science" was a distinctive and vital organizational aspect of the Scientific Revolution. It represented a break from the previously dominant ethos of secrecy in the pursuit of Nature’s Secrets, to a new set of norms, incentives, and organizational structures that reinforced scientific researchers' commitments to rapid disclosure of new knowledge.
