Course title German Lyrics of the 20th Century Double-major programme: (46352) (NJL20-D) Course code Single-major programme: (46325) (NJL20) Language of instruction German PERIOD 1900-1945 The beginning of this period is characterized by the break up with confessional lyrics and lyrical revolution headed by Arno Holz. Lyrics is developing in the course of aestheticism (Hofmannsthal, George), but it also brings up a discussion on a social subjects (Dehmel). The epoch of expressionistic lyrics (Heym, Trakl, Benn, Lichtenstein, van Hoddis, Werfel, Wolfenstein) is followed by the lyrics of the new objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit). The circle of the poets whose subject matter is nature (first of all Loerke) is also interesting, as well as the lyrics of the Course description resistance and the adjustment to the Third Reich. The refugee lyrics will enclose this period. PERIOD 1945 – 2000 The lyrics in ruin (Trümmerlyrik), the lyrics that are returning to the tradition, the hermetic and the experimental lyrics as well as the concrete lyrics will be treated in this course. The political lyrics of this period consist of the labourer's lyrics, the contemporary lyrics of the student’s rebellions and the lyrics of DDR in the 60’s and the 70’s. Afterwards we meet the everyday lyrics and the lyrics of the new subjectivity. In the end we will meet the post-modern tendency and the assembling lyrics. Form of teaching Lectures and seminars Form of assessment Single-major: continual evaluation (literature and reports) and oral exam in the end (theory) Double-major: oral exam in the end (theory and conversation about the lyric works from the reader) Essays (10-15 pages, possible to expand the report) can not replace the exam, but are part of the obligatory essays in the undergraduate studies which can influence the final mark. Final grade results 70% from achievements in the classes and 30% from final oral examination in examination periods.
